The Ugly Midwesterner Master Series
The Ugly Midwesterner Master Series is a series of live recordings, made by me, The Ugly Midwesterner, starting in 2024
and currently with no end date in sight. I intend to keep this series of recordings going until A) I die. B) Taping is
made punishable by death in the state of Nebraska. or C) Evil AI takes over the world and forces us all to live in pods
(no more concerts then!). Typically, an Ugly Midwesterner tape can be characterized by its awful quality, abundance of
crowd chatter, and/or being a band known to absolutely nobody. Currently, there are 15 tapes in The Ugly Midwesterner
Master Series. You can view more statistics about it here.

COMMENTS:
My second show I ever taped (the first one was a friend's band's concert that was sadly incomplete and taped in a lossy format).
The quality of this tape really shows how inexperienced I was at the time: my phone was in my jacket pocket, making almost all
of the sound come through the right channel. After the show, I tried to fix this, but almost anything I tried made it sound worse.
I panned the audio to the left channel by about 80%, which balanced the sound more but also made the bass drum a bit distorted on
the left channel, a trade I was willing to make. On January 27, 2026, I re-made the fileset to reflect my current fileset organization, and
added a cover. On a lot of the tracks you can hear a 14-year-old me making possibly the weakest screams ever after about every song
like a dumbass. God, I sounded like such a dork. I almost don't want to share this tape again solely for that reason + it picks up
a bunch of crowd chatter, but here we are. Sigh...

COMMENTS:
I never thought I'd put out this tape but here we are. This was my second lossless tape ever, done with a half-broken phone. I liked
the show but was unfamiliar with the Foo Fighters' material other than Pretender and Everlong. Sound was originally mostly panned to
the left so I tried my best to fix it. Still not great but what can you do. Vocals are rather unclear, overall sound fluctuates at
times. I set my phone on the concrete behind my seat to get up and dance after Congregation, sounds a bit worse after that. Note that
there are a couple cuts in places to get rid of crowd noise - sorry! Didn't take any pictures at the show so had to use a different
performance by them on YT to make it. Also one of the people on stage (bassist? sound guy? forgot) had a CBGB shirt on which was sick.
There's some weird instrumental after My Hero which I don't think has a name but I left it at the end of the track.

COMMENTS:
My second [?] time seeing the Damones, an 80s new wave cover band. They're really good, although this recording isn't. At this
point, my S9 was on its last legs - I could only get the screen to turn on about 5% of the time, and when it did, it would start
flashing green about 30 seconds into use. The thing was essentially toast, but a few days before I was scheduled to get my S24,
I went to this show. The band played two long sets, thankfully I brought a chair. They played a few favorites, namely the Devo
and Talking Heads tracks, but also a track I was unfamiliar with - Turning Japanese by The Vapors. I really liked that one. My
phone was on the ground, mics facing the stage. This is probably my worst tape, honestly, there's not much to like about it.
Distant, unbalanced sound, and the first few seconds of just about every track are pretty fucked due to some auto-leveling shit
I don't even know why it sounds like that.

And another tape of the Damones. I upgraded to a new phone, so this tape turned out a lot better than the others in my catalog.
Unfortunately this one has a lot of talking around the phone, so much so that I had to fade in a few songs as to not make you
listen to the life of two women in their forties (my mother and her friend). As stated before, this is still a phone recording,
so don't expect anything too special. Sad to see they cut the Devo and Vapors tracks from their set this time. Scans of printed
setlist included, "MA & PA" was not played.

My first ever tape with my H1e! Unfortunately it's incomplete, as I arrived about 20 minutes after the show started. All three
of these tracks are unreleased to my knowledge, first one fades in with about 10 seconds left. Fun hardcore punk with fun riffs,
hope to see them again soon. As this was my first gig using it, and I didn't want to get kicked out, the Zoom was in my pocket,
which hurts the sound a bit. You can hear some crowd chatter at points, nothing as bad as the last entry in this series but it's
still there. Didn't take any pictures so the cover was made from a video of another performance of theirs at the same venue eight
months prior.

who was in the band). Good stuff, sound improves at Cuntrol (U) Freak as I finally took the damn mic outta my pocket. Last 3
tracks have maybe the best sound I recorded at the gig. Apparently "r u ready" live debuted at this show.

A FUCKIN DOUBLE BASS! AWESOME! These guys were the headliners and the only half-popular band performing that night. They put on
a great show, the music started to sound a little repetitive to my ears near the end (perhaps I was just tired of standing) but they
were great anyway. Put my mic back in my pocket for a bit before Red Alert because a security dude was walking around with a flashlight
and I thought I was fucked but nothing happened. Phew. I changed nothing about the sound except adjusted the volume for the first ~3
minutes and the rest of the show because I was around the back of the venue when they started but I moved up during Graveyard Tree.

Falls City, Nebraska's best pop punk cover band. Good tape, mic was set on a table near the back right of the venue. Complete video

COMMENTS:
This is not a very good tape. The original plan was to try and sneak my trusty Zoom H1e into the venue, but I got nervous
at the last moment and left it in the car I was dropped off in, as this was my first time ever "attempting" to sneak
something into a show. Bad decision on my end, as when I walked in and saw the security, I was sure I could've gotten the
thing in. But to actually try and get a good tape with it was another thing. There was security everywhere watching for
people recording video with their phones, so who knows what they would have done when they saw the H1e with its glorious
microphones sticking out in the most obvious way possible. So I had to use my phone to tape, I knew I wouldn't get a good
tape with it but whatever - I am a firm believer that any recording is better than no recording. For the first two acts I
had my phone in my pocket with the mics pointing up, which doesn't sound great, but it's listenable. For the third act I
put my phone in my cupholder, with mics pointing almost straight up with a little slant toward the stage. Overall this was
an incredible show, and I finally fulfilled my dream of seeing Primus after missing them at the Astro last year. Also they
played a live version of Ween's "Birthday Boy" on the PA before the show which was great to hear.

Outdoor show, plagued by equipment issues throughout. Amps cutting out and back in, mics turning off, etc. The sad part is
the instruments on their own sound great - this would've been my best tape to date if not for that, as well as the vocals
being more distorted than I would like. I missed the first song (Dammit) but thankfully they ran out of songs on the setlist
after Voyeur, so they played it aswell as three others.

Now HERE is one of my best tapes of all time. The mic was in a stationary place all show (ontop of a box which also held
a camera ran by the band's manager) which certainly helped the sound. Very good and clear tape, one of my only qualms is
that the bass can sound weird at times, this was how it sounded at the show though. I arrived just as the soundcheck was
about to start and captured the only soundcheck they played (Blitzkrieg Bop) which was also the only new full song they
played at the show (not counting the Master of Puppets and Smells Like Teen Spirit snippets in the medley).

COMMENTS:
My first tape outside of Nebraska, justifying my name choice as to not be The Ugly Nebraskan. I don't think I saw a
single black person at this show. They ran through approximately half of the Hot 100 from the past decade, but they
did it pretty well. I move the mic around at times, ranging from between my legs to ontop of my chair's right armrest
to inside my chair's right cupholder to inside my chair's left cupholder. IMO all the positions do sound about equally
good but be warned that the sound does change a couple times. Also the first few songs clip occasionally, after that
it sounds good though. Probably one of my best tapes so far. They do a few medleys, of which I will list the original
artists here as to not make the tracklist entries too long:
t11: Katy Perry / Carly Rae Jepsen
t21: Beyonce / Miley Cyrus / Auliʻi Cravalho / 4 Non Blondes
t27: The Notorious B.I.G. / Warren G / Dr. Dre / 50 Cent

COMMENTS:
Homecoming show, with three new songs. I set my Zoom down on the trailer that they had all the wood on but I didn't see the wood cuz it was too dark + i'm an Actual Fucking Idiot. Fast forward to Edging and some girl picks up my mic and shows it to all her little friends, making the recording unlistenable. I didn't know any of this was happening at the time. Eventually, she's had her fun and asks the band manager if it was his, to which he tells her that it's mine. He has the mic for the rest of the song, and after it, the band announces that the bonfire will be lit very soon. Realizing my mistake, I ran back over to the trailer while he's yelling my name (not telling me that he has it), I run back up to him, grab the mic, and make it back to the crowd just in time for the next song. The sound quality for the rest of the show isn't too great honestly, sounds clear but just not good overall. It also has a bit of that vocal issue I had on TUMMS #012. I'm probably going to get external mics (probably CSBs) just because of this.

Yet another reason why I need external mics. Pretty good show although Everlong is absolutely fucked because Avery
forgot his guitar part (as well as two people slamming on the table the mic was on at the start of it). Definitely
could've picked a better place for my mic as the position it was in caused it to pick up a large amount of crowd
noise, particularly from two teenagers. Pretty balanced recording but it could be better. Hoping this isn't the
last time they play Everlong due to the fuckup.

My fourth time seeing these guys, and second time taping. Great show though I would've liked a couple deeper
cuts on the setlist. My uncle and aunt were there which I was not expecting, though looking back they usually
go to see Floyd whenever they play in Lincoln. Really good recording IMO, mics pointed toward the right speaker
stack. Occasionally you can hear some audience chatter (incl. my aunt asking me about my recorder) but nothing
intrusive.

COMMENTS:
Their first show in three months. Sorely missing the three originals that were promised to us 4000 years
ago but still a great show. A bit of crowd noise at times but nothing too bad. Placement wasn't optimal;
I was right next to the left speaker which resulted in a suboptimal sound, tried my best to fix it in post
but there's only so much I can do. They played two sets but my recording of the second one is fucked cuz
I set my mics up right next to the drumset which resulted in an outstanding clarity recording of the drums
and not much else. Don't know if I'll ever release it, sorry, which sucks cuz they played Blitzkrieg Bop
as one of the encores, as well as Scotty Doesn't Know THREE TIMES due to a few 40-something women having
way too much of a good time. You can find the full 63-song (!!!) setlist on setlistfm.

The first set of the night, supporting Frank Turner + Descendents. Saw metal detectors at the doors, and
since I hadn't attempted to sneak gear through one of those before, I thought I was fucked, but I
surprisingly got in. Thought they were a local band but apparently they're Canadian and also big enough to
have their own Wikipedia page so there's that. Had a pretty good time, sort of typical "we're GIRLS so we
sing songs about WINE and PUSSY and OTHER GIRLY THINGS" schtick I've seen before but most of the songs were
good enough to make up for it. Shoutout to Tara on the bongos during some of the songs.

Third set of the night. Had a great time even if I had only heard a few Descendents songs before (Pervert,
Coffee Mug, Myage). Highlight was probably Van for me, really fun 13/8 PHxC thing. Technically "No, All!"
is done at the end of Weinerschnitzel but it's more of an updated part of the song. Included in this fileset
is a scan of a ticket I found on the floor at the end of the show after failing to get a setlist. I got one
terrible picture of the setlist during the show which you can't even make out of any of the songs on.
Apparently Mother Nature didn't want me to get this seeded as fifteen hours after I sent the cover for this
show to a friend I was rear ended on the interstate during the worst snowstorm I've ever seen. I'm home safe
now so you get to hear this, enjoy.

And another incomplete Damones tape where I arrived in the middle of the first set. Luckily I got to stay for the second set this
time around. They did 14 songs I haven't seen them play before (granted I haven't seen them in six months but whatever). Fun show,
setlist scans included in fileset. Really pissed they got rid of Tony though, according to his Facebook it wasn't by his own decision.
He was definitely my favorite member of the band by far. Decent set, though I still miss Whip It and Turning Japanese and some of
the other songs. My sister had a soccer game which ended at 8:30 and the drive from the place to the venue was like 30 minutes so
I got there about 9. I arrived just as they were finishing The Breakup Song and it took me a couple minutes to get my mics and stuff
set up, so you can hear a bit of fiddling with the mics at the start of You Spin Me Round. Turned out pretty good I think, somewhat
noisy crowd but still enjoyable. I saw a phone on a stand in the sound booth recording the whole set (the battery died during set 2),
don't know if that'll ever come out on YouTube or something but I would like to see the first half of set one. I did get my own video
of The Metro which will be on YouTube soon.

Amy Winehouse cover set, supporting the annual Anchondo covers Sublime set here. Good show, she had a great voice, not much to say.
Recorded from the balcony with my mics in my hands as the clip to my left mic broke off IN MY FUCKING POCKET before the show. Going
to assume this venue doesn't care about taping cuz there was a security guy right next to me and he didn't say anything. I guess that
dream I had about getting caught taping BCNR here was inaccurate.

Annual Sublime cover set. This show made me realize that all the dub/spoken word tracks on the Sublime studio albums are what really
make them special, honestly I was kinda bored during the middle of the set but STP (their best song no question) got me back into it.
The Doin' Time solos were also sick. My mother and sister left after Santeria or so cuz my sister's stomach was hurting, unfortunate
but I got to stay. Recorded from the balcony with my mics in my hands.

Stomach book live stomach book live tell all your friends! Great show, probably should've worn earplugs but whatever; if I went
deaf because of this show I wouldn't be mad. Great show with Viv herself killing on vox as always, Starri shredding the guitar,
and Riley on drums. Riley very much still has room for improvement (check the We All Fall Down outro for what I can only really
describe as a trainwreck) but for most of the show she was decent enough, albeit she kind of falls apart on the fills. I do wish
they played more stuff from the first two albums as I'm not the hugest on Goodnight Hypnopomp [still love Paper Dolls and Fukouna
Girl] but it's fine. One of my friends kept praying to Kaleb Winchester [inside joke] for them to play We All Fall Down and I didn't
have the heart to tell him that there was pretty much no chance, though I was secretly praying for either Devils or Metanoia, the
former of which they've only done once and the latter of which they've never done live, so his request was a whole lot more reasonable.
I am still mostly happy with the set though, especially Folie a Deux and Tragedy. There were a whole lot of people dressed up in
stuff, for example, I saw about three people with tails, a whole bunch of pride flags, and someone in a Sylveon suit, which I will
forever regret not complimenting them on. TL;DR Tragedy live changed me.
