The Ugly Midwesterner Master Series
The Ugly Midwesterner Master Series is a series of live recordings, made by me, The Ugly Midwesterner, starting in 2024
and currently with no end date in sight. I intend to keep this series of recordings going until A) I die. B) Taping is
made punishable by death in the state of Nebraska. or C) Evil AI takes over the world and forces us all to live in pods
(no more concerts then!). Typically, an Ugly Midwesterner tape can be characterized by its awful quality, abundance of
crowd chatter, and/or being a band known to absolutely nobody. Currently, there are 11 tapes in The Ugly Midwesterner
Master Series. You can view more statistics about it here.

COMMENTS:
My second show I ever taped (the first one was a friend's band's concert that was sadly incomplete and taped in a lossy format).
The quality of this tape really shows how inexperienced I was at the time: my phone was in my jacket pocket, making almost all
of the sound come through the right channel. After the show, I tried to fix this, but almost anything I tried made it sound worse.
I panned the audio to the left channel by about 80%, which balanced the sound more but also made the bass drum a bit distorted on
the left channel, a trade I was willing to make. On June 9, I re-made the fileset to reflect my current fileset organization, and
added a cover. On a lot of the tracks you can hear a 14-year-old me making possibly the weakest screams ever after about every song
like a dumbass. God, I sounded like such a dork. I almost don't want to share this tape again solely for that reason + it picks up
a bunch of crowd chatter, but here we are. Sigh...

COMMENTS:
My second [?] time seeing the Damones, an 80s new wave cover band. They're really good, although this recording isn't. At this
point, my S9 was on its last legs - I could only get the screen to turn on about 5% of the time, and when it did, it would start
flashing green about 30 seconds into use. The thing was essentially toast, but a few days before I was scheduled to get my S24,
I went to this show. The band played two long sets, thankfully I brought a chair. They played a few favorites, namely the Devo
and Talking Heads tracks, but also a track I was unfamiliar with - Turning Japanese by The Vapors. I really liked that one. My
phone was on the ground, mics facing the stage. This is probably my worst tape, honestly, there's not much to like about it.
Distant, unbalanced sound, and the first few seconds of just about every track are pretty fucked due to some auto-leveling shit
I don't even know why it sounds like that.

COMMENTS:
And another tape of the Damones. I upgraded to a new phone, so this tape turned out a lot better than the others in my catalog.
Unfortunately this one has a lot of talking around the phone, so much so that I had to fade in a few songs as to not make you
listen to the life of two women in their forties (my mother and her friend). As stated before, this is still a phone recording,
so don't expect anything too special. Sad to see they cut the Devo and Vapors tracks from their set this time. Scans of printed
setlist included, "MA & PA" was not played.

COMMENTS:
My first ever tape with my H1e! Unfortunately it's incomplete, as I arrived about 20 minutes after the show started. All three
of these tracks are unreleased to my knowledge, first one fades in with about 10 seconds left. Fun hardcore punk with fun riffs,
hope to see them again soon. As this was my first gig using it, and I didn't want to get kicked out, the Zoom was in my pocket,
which hurts the sound a bit. You can hear some crowd chatter at points, nothing as bad as the last entry in this series but it's
still there. Didn't take any pictures so the cover was made from a video of another performance of theirs at the same venue eight
months prior.

The second performance of the night, of which there were four. Slower, more "normal" punk than DSM-5, but still alright. To my
knowledge, four of these tracks are released and four are unreleased.

The third outta four bands, The Rumours were really fun. Good music, also the reason why I went (mother's friend had a friend
who was in the band). Good stuff, sound improves at Cuntrol (U) Freak as I finally took the damn mic outta my pocket. Last 3
tracks have maybe the best sound I recorded at the gig. Apparently "r u ready" live debuted at this show.

COMMENTS:
A FUCKIN DOUBLE BASS! AWESOME! These guys were the headliners and the only half-popular band performing that night. They put on
a great show, the music started to sound a little repetitive to my ears near the end (perhaps I was just tired of standing) but they
were great anyway. Put my mic back in my pocket for a bit before Red Alert because a security dude was walking around with a flashlight
and I thought I was fucked but nothing happened. Phew. I changed nothing about the sound except adjusted the volume for the first ~3
minutes and the rest of the show because I was around the back of the venue when they started but I moved up during Graveyard Tree.

Opening for Small Town Avenue. These guys were okay but the sound of the venue really put me off and I tend to dislike metalcore.
For whatever reason most of the people I asked said they enjoyed these guys more than STA.

Falls City, Nebraska's best pop punk cover band. Good tape, mic was set on a table near the back right of the venue. Complete video
was recorded by the manager but has yet to be posted, I also captured video of almost every song from the audience (missing most of
American Idiot). Includes their only original song so far, "Truck".

COMMENTS:
This is not a very good tape. The original plan was to try and sneak my trusty Zoom H1e into the venue, but I got nervous
at the last moment and left it in the car I was dropped off in, as this was my first time ever "attempting" to sneak
something into a show. Bad decision on my end, as when I walked in and saw the security, I was sure I could've gotten the
thing in. But to actually try and get a good tape with it was another thing. There was security everywhere watching for
people recording video with their phones, so who knows what they would have done when they saw the H1e with its glorious
microphones sticking out in the most obvious way possible. So I had to use my phone to tape, I knew I wouldn't get a good
tape with it but whatever - I am a firm believer that any recording is better than no recording. For the first two acts I
had my phone in my pocket with the mics pointing up, which doesn't sound great, but it's listenable. For the third act I
put my phone in my cupholder, with mics pointing almost straight up with a little slant toward the stage. Overall this was
an incredible show, and I finally fulfilled my dream of seeing Primus after missing them at the Astro last year. Also they
played a live version of Ween's "Birthday Boy" on the PA before the show which was great to hear.

COMMENTS:
Outdoor show, plagued by equipment issues throughout. Amps cutting out and back in, mics turning off, etc. The sad part is the instruments on their own sound great - this would've been my best tape to date if not for that, as well as the vocals being more distorted than I would like. I missed the first song (Dammit) but thankfully they ran out of songs on the setlist after Voyeur, so they played it aswell as three others.
